My name is Krista Hartwick and I am the proud owner of featherbaby.ca! I'm a big animal lover.  Growing up, I had about every kind of pet you could possibly imagine! Now, I have four precious Cockatiels, ten curious Lovebirds, a goofy Goffins Cockatoo, a sweet Moustache Parakeet and two dogs, a Weimaraner and a Yorkshire Terrier.

In 2003, I got my first bird, Buttercup.  Buttercup is a female Lutino Cockatiel.  I could not believe that birds could make such wonderful pets!  I found myself fascinated by her nature.  I began to read all kinds of books on Cockatiels and soon started reading about all kinds of exotic birds.

About a year later, I decided to adopt a Black Masked Lovebird and a Green Quaker from a non-profit rescue.  Both birds had major behavioural issues that came to a compete surprise to me after owning a handraised parrot.  Although this was frustrating to me at times, I really enjoyed the challenge and I began to research parrot behaviour training and rehabilitation.

Throughout my experiences with these feathered friends, I discovered that it was very difficult to find a qualified avian veterinarian.  In fact, several veterinarians that I had contacted refused to see my pet and couldn't even provide me with the name of another animal hospital that specialized in avian care.  This was very upsetting to me, so I began to search for answers.

After completing a Biology assignment on an animal of my choice, ...a bird of course, I concluded that the anatomy of a parrot is extremely complex and unlike any other animal. Due to the lack of avian services that are available, I have made it my mission to learn, share and provide a variety of services for parrot owners.

My ultimate goal for Feather Baby Oasis is to develop a program to financially assist pet owners when their parrot is in need of medical treatment.  Many pet owners are obligated to surrender their pets to local rescues and humane societies when they can't afford to treat them.  In some cases, euthanasia seems like the most practical solution. I would like to change this to save our pets and keep them where they belong... with their owners!
